Makeup for a Bright Summer Glow

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Everyone wants to have that tan glow during the spring and summer — but it isnt always easy to achieve, especially if you are sitting in an office every day. There are some great makeup products out there, from tarte and other brands, that can help you recreate that glowing from within look. For the summer, I usually swap in a few shimmery, bright colored products and swap out some of the standard, heavier products that I use for the rest of the year. For example, I prefer using a tinted moisturizer or BB cream in the summer versus a regular foundation at other times during the year. Or Ill swap in a highlighter or finishing powder in place of a regular blush.

Bronzer/blush: I love products that give you both a bronzer and a blush at the same time. This tarte colored clay bronzer blush has a great range of pinks, tans and browns, and is color correcting.

Highlighter/finishing powder: A brightening, shimmery finishing powder is another great way to get that summer glow without adding too much bulk to your face makeup. The tarte smooth operator amazonian clay finishing powder can be worn with your foundation or by itself for a lighter makeup day. Or try this Hourglass ambient lighting powder to dust over your finished look for some extra shimmer.

Concealer: Concealer is always a must for me, at least under my eyes if I don't have any blemishes. This Bare Minerals eye brightener looks like the perfect solution to concealing dark circles and lighting up the under eye area.

Eye shadow: I love summer eye shadow colors because you can really reach outside your comfort zone for bolder colors. I’d love to try shades in this tarte golden days sultry nights amazonian clay palette or for a faster eye look, these Bobbi Brown shadow sticks. For lighter makeup days, try this neutral Nars shade or this Bobbi Brown creme shadow.

Lip gloss/balm: The new trend of the color changing lip glosses is pretty cool and would definitely brighten up a look for the summer. Ditch the bright red or pink lips and go with something a little more natural like the tarte lipsurgence skintuitive lip gloss, which changes colors based on your lips’ color and temperature. For lighter makeup days, try a tinted balm that will provide some color and keep lips hydrated like this Bare Minerals jack of all trades lip balm.

Mascara: I always use mascara no matter what and in the summer you can basically use any kind. This tarte gifted amazonian clay smart mascara hydrates lashes and makes them stronger, so you can withstand those hot summer days.

Spring + Summer Essentials

Monday, May 18, 2015

Happy Monday! I'm headed to San Francisco tomorrow for my last business trip for a while. Can't wait to be home after that to enjoy the warm weather here in Boston and get back to a normal routine. Above are some things I can't live without during the summer months -- a few of which are on my wish list right now too. I did just get the VV shorts and hat though, both of which I've been wearing a lot lately.

Where I've Been + Weekly Wish List

Monday, May 11, 2015

I'm finally home for a few days before I head off to the Cape this week for a company offsite. It's been a whirlwind few weeks with two trips to NYC, a trip to Florida for our friends' wedding and some vacation time and back to Boston for Mother's Day weekend.

As you can see I went with the red Madewell dress with the gold Madewell necklace for the wedding in Florida -- very happy with my choice! The weather was absolutely perfect so any dress would've worked but I thought the bright pop of color looked great in pictures.

Now that it turned to summer overnight in Boston I have some warm weather items on my wish list -- like easy dresses for work and casual and workout shorts, as well as some new makeup, of course!

Happy Monday!

Outfits for Spring Events

Monday, May 4, 2015

I don't know about you but spring is one of the busiest times of the year for me. Weddings, events and parties start to fill up my calendar and I'm left searching for new outfits for each thing. Given the current trends however, it's almost easier now to find a variety of great outfits to buy that you can wear again and again. Jumpsuits, rompers, maxi dresses, mini dresses or even a dressy pair of shorts or pants can work, depending on the event. I usually buy one expensive item, then a few affordable ones to get me through the season. rue21 is one place to get trendy pieces at a really great price point, especially if you want to try a new style that you haven't tried before.

Jumpsuits/playsuits/rompers: As long as the fabric is dressy enough and it's not too revealing, you can make a playsuits, rompers and jumpsuits work for almost any occasion, except for probably a black tie wedding. To dress them up, I would add a pair of cute wedges or heels and earrings or a necklace. Since the outfit is pretty much the statement because it's a one piece, I would stay away from any bag or jewelry that could overpower it. My favorites are this bow back romper here and this crochet romper here.

Maxi dresses: It took me a while to jump on the maxi dress bandwagon but now there's such a nice variety out there that you can find any look you want. A dressier fabric would be great for a more formal event, but a casual fabric can look very put together and polished as well. I could picture a formal maxi at a wedding and a casual one with a jean jacket or sweater at a graduation, outdoor party or beach party. My favorites are this chiffon maxi, this strappy maxi and this printed maxi.

Mini dresses: For warm weather or warm climate events, I usually prefer a mini dress. As long as it's not too short or tight, a mini dress can work with any shoes, jewelry or bag and is super easy and comfortable to pack and throw on. I love the fit and flare look, as well as A-line skirts or strapless. My favorites are this sweetheart strapless dress, this lace dress and this spring flower crochet dress.

I'm heading out to Florida today for a wedding then some much-needed vacation days. I narrowed down my outfits for the wedding and related festivities to the following -- now I just have to decide which dress to wear to which event! Let me know which you think would be best for the wedding and rehearsal dinner (the third I'm going to save for another wedding next month).

Happy Friday!
