Interview with Brittany of Suburb Chic

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Suburb Chic was one of the first blogs I discovered when I created my blog and Brittany was one of my first blog friends. Naturally I had to ask her to do an interview with me! Brittany is a busy mom from West Virginia but always stays on top of the trends and brings fresh ideas to her blog. Take a minute and check out Suburb Chic!

1. What inspired you to start a blog? I've always been a writer, a fashion lover, and an information sharer...it just took me until now to put them all together. As a stay-at-home mom, I felt like I had nobody to share my "lady information" with so I started Suburb Chic to simply do that! I was looking to learn and share the trends in all aspects of a suburban lifestyle.

2. How would you define your style? Playfully feminine, though it changes with my mood. I always like to have a little flirty, feminine thing going on no matter if I go all-out glam or super casual at the gym. Really, my style is very "Suburb Chic"...it's trendy and edgy enough to allow me to stand-out in the suburbs, but it's not as high-end and developed (yet) as it might be in New York City.

3. Where is your favorite place to shop in your area? Honestly, there are not a lot of places here that inspire me and of which I relate to style-wise...but I do find great pieces at Kohl's, TJ Maxx, even JC Penney's here. Mainly, I shop online or splurge when our family travels out of town. I love a good shopping haul on Piperlime.com as well as on sites like Love Culture, Nordstrom's, BCBG and BCBGeneration, and Aritzia.

4. What's your favorite thing in your closet? Just one?! Haha. My "favorites" change frequently, but right now I am utterly obsessed with this BarIII Motorcycle Jacket I found on clearance at Macy's (NEED TO FIND PICTURE OF). It fits me perfectly, giving any look I pair it with instant edge. I'm also quite fond of this pair of white Tildon sandals, from Nordstrom's, that I often pair with the said motorcycle jacket. They are what I refer to as the "Modern Boheme" with clean lines and hippie-chic thick straps. Perfection!

5. Would you rather splurge on one big item or buy a bunch of smaller things? Splurging is difficult for me, and I usually have guilt when doing so unless it's on a piece I know will be a timeless staple (i.e. my gold Kate Spade watch). I'd rather buy a big ol' bag of Forever21 goodies and find ways to style them chicly.

6. What's your dream vacation spot? Anywhere with sand, sun, and a nice easy breeze! I love tropical, warm weather and salt-infused air.

7. What's the one thing you can't leave home without? My children! Haha. No really, that's illegal.

8. Do you have any makeup or beauty secrets? My makeup/beauty skills aren't quite as legit as my styling abilities; however, I have been learning lots just from watching and reading other bloggers and YouTubers. I honestly think that confidence and ease with yourself both radiate 10x more than whatever products you are using or crazy tricks you are trying. Ohh, but I do use apple cider vinegar on my face as a cleanser/gentle exfoliator. Is that a secret? It works, I swear! It gives me a rozy, clean complexion like I used an expensive peel.

9. Who's your fashion icon(s)? Rosie Huntington-Whitley is the epitome of easy, natural beauty...I am also a devoted fan to the coolness of Diane Kruger. I mean look at her. Other fashion inspirations for me? Miranda Kerr has been killing it with her street style lately; Olivia Palermo is just an amazing master of mixing, her style is impeccable. Ohh, and I can't forget bold bloggers like Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific. She is major!

10. Name one thing on your wish list right now. There is this beautiful pearl and bead statement necklace from Pree Brulee I've been checking on for months...eek! It's amazing. I am also on the hunt for a new liquid foundation with medium coverage, no spf, not completely matte. Any help from readers would be awesome!

Get the Look: Taylor Swift

Monday, April 29, 2013

Taylor Swift's fashion has come a long way since she came onto the scene. While I love most of her red carpet looks, I also think she has a great casual sense of style. She wears a lot of casual sundresses but when I found this look, I was in love with how stylish and classic it was. It's a super easy look to recreate and there are tons of ways to make it your own.

Weekend Finds

Sunday, April 28, 2013

I wasn't even planning on shopping this weekend but everywhere I went I found a good deal that I couldn't pass up. I have a whole bunch of events coming up next month including two graduations, a work event and a few vacation days in Florida....so there were several reasons to validate my purchases....plus both dresses were amazing deals!

Found this Theory dress at Second Time Around for $40 (I also had a coupon)! It should make a great work dress and is perfect to wear with a statement necklace.

Snagged this Lilly Pulitzer dress at TJ Maxx for $40. I'm planning to wear it in Florida next week with sandals and a cross body bag.

Did anyone else find great deals this weekend?

[Can't wait to get my new Stella & Dot scarf in the mail!]

[Going to do my part in supporting the Boston One fund with items like this one from Etsy]

Hope everyone has a nice, sunny weekend!

Sprucing Up Workwear

Thursday, April 25, 2013

It's still in the 50's out this week but I've been daydreaming about how I would spruce up my work wardrobe for the warmer days...if they ever come! I love the Rag & Bone blazer and the red JCrew skirt, both are items you can create a lot of spring and summer outfits with. The blazer is still professional and the skirt is fun and bright, just add some classic accessories and closed toed flats and you'll be all set for the office.

Bringing Back the Headband

Wednesday, April 24, 2013

I saw some gorgeous headbands at Anthropologie the other day and nearly bought one but at $38, it was a bit outside my budget. I'm still hoping that one day it will go on sale! It got me thinking that I should dig out the headbands that I haven't worn in a while. I found some really cute ones online, including the ones below, in a variety of styles, from sporty, to sparkly, to simple. I think I'm going to bring back the headband and start wearing all of mine again, why not!

Spring Basics Under $50

Tuesday, April 23, 2013

Spring is in-between season in New England. It isn't quite warm enough for shorts and sandals, but most of the time you can get away with shorter sleeves and lighter fabrics. Spring seems to only last a few weeks before hot sun and humidity get here so I usually pick up some inexpensive basics, like layering shirts and dresses with sleeves. Here are some great finds under $50.

Friday Five

Friday, April 12, 2013

This week my Friday Five is a diverse mix of things I'm loving at the moment. I'm headed to Hoboken and NYC tomorrow for the next five days. I'm attending a professional conference, visiting my bf's parents, doing a site visit for work and then working an event for work. Whew! Hope everyone has a great and more relaxing weekend than I'll have!

Hope everyone has a fun weekend!!

The Perfect Spring Dress

Thursday, April 11, 2013

This red fit and flare dress from J. Crew is the perfect thing to wear throughout the spring and summer. It's fitted on top and has a nice full skirt on the bottom and would make a great outfit for work or going out, plus red is my favorite color. I'd match it with a gold necklace and clutch, a fun bracelet, Kate Middleton inspired shoes and bold blue nail polish. (Psst, J. Crew stores are having a 25% off promotion on knits so go get this dress before it's gone!)

White Jeans: 4 Ways

Wednesday, April 10, 2013

As soon as it's appropriate (and I don't even wait for Memorial Day) I love to start wearing my white jeans. I have two really good pairs, one flare and one cropped, and both fit great and match all of my spring tops and accessories. I think having a few pairs of great white jeans can almost be as valuable and flattering as having great regular jeans or black jeans. The white is just crisp and clean for the spring. Here are four great types and ways you can style them!

Spring Jackets

Monday, April 8, 2013

I finally scored a great deal on a utility jacket this weekend at the outlets. Down from over $200, I found a Ralph Lauren navy blue utility jacket, similar to the JCrew one below. The price ended up being $68 and it fits great and came with a really cute belt. The weather is supposed to get up to 70 degrees this week so I'm hoping I'll have a chance to wear it. Here are some other favorite spring jackets:

Friday Five

Friday, April 5, 2013

Happy Friday everyone! My little sister is home this weekend so I'm looking forward to a few great days of home cooked meals, shopping and watching way too many episodes of Barefoot Contessa and Giada on Food Network. Here are five of my favorites today:

[These amazing scallop shorts from Club Monaco, they have such beautiful clothes]

[Saw this Steve Madden scarf at Nordstrom the other day, only $36!]

[Made this feta, tomato and olive crostini with my bf last weekend,
it's a delicious appetizer and super easy!]

[Sperry does flats? Yeah I didn't know either! I found a great pair, similar to these, at Nordy Rack and they are super comfortable and perfect as everyday work shoes]

[Obsessed with this skirt from JCrew Factory, just ordered it online, got the wrong size so I have to return it, but it's gorgeous and has perfect colors for the spring]

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Geek Chic

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

Ever since I got my Ray Ban glasses I've been obsessed with geek chic looks. A great blazer, skinny pants and your specs will make the perfect booksmart look. These are some of my favorite ways to rock your frames:

Spring Chain Strap Purses

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

This post is dedicated to how long I've wanted a Rebecca Minkoff Mini Mac. I saw the new spring colors at Nordstrom the other day and almost fainted. Although I think I'd still buy it in a neutral color, I do love the periwinkle, pinks and oranges that the bag is available in now. I think a chain strap purse in a pop of color or floral pattern is the perfect accessory in the spring. Here are some of my favorites:

Weekly Wish List

Monday, April 1, 2013

It's been 50 degrees for a few days in a row and I think I can safely start thinking about spring clothes and accessories. I've been doing more window shopping than anything since I'm still recovering from vacation spending, but here are great little things I've spotted recently.

Weekly Wish List

  • This blue Madewell dress is the perfect stretchy shift dress with an A line skirt and it even has pockets!
  • The Michael Kors tote comes in a bunch of great bold colors and is only $98, which is a great bargain.
  • Pink and orange are great colors to spice up a t-shirt and jeans, this scarf is lightweight and spring-ready.
  • I tried on this Lilly dress when I was in Florida and sadly didn't buy it...but I've been thinking about it ever since, it's gorgeous!

What's on your wish list at the moment?

Happy April!
