Madewell's Fall Collection

Friday, August 31, 2012

I love Madewell and I am so ready for fall. The "it" color this fall is supposed to be shades of red wine/burgundy and while I do like that for one accent item, I prefer shades of brighter red, cranberry or pink.

Madewell: Peplum Top, Polka Dot Dress, Bootleg Cords, Bracelets, Button Down Shirt, Circle Scarf, Wallet

Check out Madewell! While it's still a bit expensive, they do have great sales and it's still less expensive than JCrew (it's parent company).

What's in my Makeup Bag?

Thursday, August 30, 2012

I never used to be into makeup and to this day I still don't go crazy with it. But there are several products I cannot live without and will continue buying forever.

Here's what's in my makeup bag at the moment. These are my everyday items that I can put on in about 10 minutes.

Almay Intense i-Color: This mascara is very similar to the clinque product, but about half the price. It has a big brush and really extends the eyelashes. Be sure to use eye makeup remover with it though.

Dream Matte Mousse: (in Classic Ivory) I use this as my base/foundation, it's really smooth and covers up any blemishes or pimples. I'm

Mac creme blush: (in BritWit) I mostly use this in the winter to give my cheeks some more color. It's kind of the same consistency as lip balm and you really don't need to use a lot to get a lot of color.

Mac eyeshadow: (in Gleam) I love this color because it works for day and night.

Benefit Box o Powder (in Dallas and Coralista or Sugarbomb): This is my favorite bronzer and highlighter. These boxes last nearly six months. I use Dallas as my bronzer and Coralista (or Sugarbomb) as my highlighter, which adds a nice layer of shimmer.

What are your must-have makeup items? Do you use a combination of drug store makeup and designer?

Why Accessories are Important

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

An outfit is just an outfit without accessories. Accessories can spice up an outfit by creating a pop of color, a contrast or simply make an average outfit into an amazing one. I've been into bracelets lately but there are tons more things that can be used as accessories such as scarves, purses, glasses and even cell phone cases. Here are a few of my favorites.
Ray Ban frames

JCrew

Anthropologie

DVF
Tory Burch

A lot of these similar styles can be found at TJ Maxx, Marshall's or Nordy Rack. Don't forget to check there before you buy the designer stuff!

New York City On the Mind

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

New York City always makes me think of fall, which is my favorite season. Colorful leaves, a chill in the air and colors like red, orange and brown. I'm going there this weekend and even though it's supposed to be 90 degrees, I'm still hoping for some cooler weather so I can wear my skinny jeans and scarves (maybe at night).

I just bought these purple Paige skinny jeans at TJ Maxx so I was trying to figure out a fall-inspired outfit I could wear them with that would also work for the warm weather...while it lasts.

Jeans (Paige), Scarf (JCrew), Purse (Rebecca Minkoff), Phone Case (Tory Burch), Flats (Tory Burch), Top (Madewell)

Enjoy! Happy September (on Saturday)!

Top 5 Fashion Inspirations

Monday, August 27, 2012

Top 5 Fashion Inspirations: these are my top 5 celebrity role models for great style. These ladies make great style choices time and time again, they can even make something a bit offbeat look good.

Blake Lively: From Gossip Girl to The Town, Blake always looks amazing. Supposedly she styles herself and does her own hair and makeup...and if so, she does a damn good job.

Kate Middleton: Every girl would love to be a princess and for Kate Middleton that wish actually came true. All she needs is a pair of nude LK Bennett pumps and a few outfits from Reiss and she looks like a million bucks.

Gisele Bundchen: I'm pretty jealous of who she's married to, but it hasn't stopped me from admiring her style. She can rock a gown or a pair of skinny jeans and look great.

Jennifer Aniston: She can wear a simple LBD or LWD with no accessories or jeans and a white t-shirt and every woman will envy her. Not to mention, she has the best hair ever.

Diane Kruger: She's not the most popular actress, but is best known as Joshua Jackson's arm candy. Her style is what's putting her on the map.

Who are your style inspirations?

A Great Find for a Great Night

Sunday, August 26, 2012

On my business trip to California we had an awards dinner where we had to dress up. Normally I don't want to spend too much on clothes for business trips, especially for formal events for work, because I'll have to settle for something conservative or boring, or wear the outfit only once.

Just so happens, I was browing around TJ Maxx and I found this amazing Nanette Lepore dress for 1/3 the original price. It was the last one on the rack, and I wasn't sure the size would fit me. I had even found another Rebecca Taylor dress that I thought would look better. But I tried on the Nanette and it looked amazing, fit just right and was just over $100. Plus, it's work appropriate! I wore it with my Bandolino nude pumps and pearl drop earrings.

I even got to be Vanna White, handing out the awards on stage to the winners!

Don't forget, always check the bargain stores before spending too much on an outfit you'll only wear a handful of times. You never know what you'll find!

Planning My Arm Party

Friday, August 24, 2012

I've been really into bracelets lately ever since I got my big face Michael Kors watch. I've been hitting up Baublebar for trendy, colorful pieces and finding bracelets at little boutiques and craft shows when I travel. Here are a few of my favorites. I think it's good to blend a bunch of neutral bracelets with a really colorful bangle that you can match with what you're wearing.

Online Sales - Your Plan of Attack

Friday, August 17, 2012

To tell you the truth, I'm not the biggest fan of shopping online. But I do check my favorite websites' sale sections on the regular. You never know what you'll find and usually it's stuff that the store is already out of. It's the end of the summer now so sales in-store and online are really good. If you've resisted the summer trends up until now, you may have a chance to get some really good finds for cheap.

Work and Play

I love a black-on-black outfit. And I love it even more when I get to add fun pops of color to it. The necklace, bag, and shoes are all fun by themselves and together they make this outfit come alive. I like that this outfit is work appropriate and cute for after work avtivities too.

Pants (Citizens of Humanity), Top (Madewell), Shoes (Nine West, similar), Necklace (borrowed, similar), Purse (Kate Spade), Sunnies (Ray Ban aviators)

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Well I thought my wish list was a lot smaller...until I got the 652 page September issue of InStyle...oops.

Just thought I'd share some great items with you, so maybe you'll buy them before I empty my wallet on them.

But why may I ask, is JLo on the cover, again?

Packing List

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

What do I pack when I'm going on a business trip?

I'm going to California this weekend for a business trip and over the last two years I've become quite good at packing. Most of the time it can be pretty boring to pack for work: a plain business suit, unsexy heels and all your work materials. (Can't complain because this time I'm going here, see below)

But there are some essentials that you shouldn't forget when traveling, or for any reason. This is why my friends call me the business pro.

  • Bring something to read. A book, magazine, or e-reader. In case your flight is delayed or the flight doesn't show a movie, you have to have something to help you pass the time. I recommend InStyle (if you can handle carrying it) because the issues are usually long so it'll keep you busy for a while. Also, Vanity Fair has great in-depth articles and it's something you can read cover to cover.

  • Pack chap stick, lotion, eye drops and socks for the plane. The air can really dry you out, especially on a long flight. (See Ali's post on Lypsyl)
L'Occitane
  • Bring a big, comfy scarf that you can wrap around several times that can act like a sweater. It'll keep you warm, trust me, you'll need it.
  • Comfortable and cute shoes that you can tolerate while walking long distances in the terminal. I recommend Toms or Sperry's. Both are comfortable to wear for long periods of time and they aren't as messy-looking as athletic sneakers.

Your Everyday Lip Balm

I have tried all lip balms. All. And I have found my favorites, and what I think are the best out there.
Sugar lip balm sold at Sephora is a great balm, stays on for hours, has a great scent and gives a nice shine while relieving chapped lips.

However, at $22.50 a pop I knew I had to find cheaper version for my obsession to always have some sort of balm on my lips.

Lypsyl Swedish Beeswax is sold at drugstores (usually located in end-of-asile displays). It has all of the above qualities like Sugar, and is under $3.00. (CVS often does a 2/$5 deal on them too!)

So, for any of you who love lip balms and chapsticks I definitely recommend trying these two products!

Smooch away!

Jeans: What You Need to Know

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

Finding the perfect pair of jeans is like finding a needle in a haystack. But there are ways you can better your chances.

Start by collecting a few staples: black jeans, dark wash denim, skinny fit and straight leg or boot cut. Save the trendy styles for later.

Choose the brand that's right for your body type. This might take more than a few tries (and errors). Try them on in the store and buy them tight; tight enough that you can button them, but not too tight that you're in pain.

Don't take the tags off right away when you get home. Wear them around the house to make sure that they are comfortable and give a little bit. But you don't want too much give that they stretch out and start to sag or fall down.

Better Buy: Compare with Gap

Better Buy: Compare with J. Crew Factory Toothpick Jeans

Best Bronzer

Hoola by Benefit is one of the best bronzers out there, it can be used all over the face or just to highlight the cheekbones. The powder goes on smoothly and lasts the entire day. This little square lasts about 6-8 months, so at $28 it's a good investment.
(Available at Sephora and department stores like Macy's, Bloomingdales, JC Penney)

My Go-To Summer Look

Top (Madewell), Earrings (J.Crew), Shorts (J.Crew), Bracelet (J.Crew), Necklace (J.Crew), Flats (Tory Burch), Nail Polish (Essie, Color: Camera), Purse (Tory Burch)

Everyone has their go-to look for the summer, whether it's sundresses, tank tops or shorts. These are my favorite staple items of the summer and this is an outfit that you can throw on quickly and wear to anything. I think every outfit should have a pop of color and neutrals to tone it down.

I own this Tory Burch purse and got it at half price during the winter sale. It's great for work because it has different sections for all your stuff and looks professional.

I also highly recommend Tory Burch flats, every girl should invest in a pair of these. They are a wardrobe staple, something that is great for work and for going out. (Tip: they also make a wide foot look more narrow.)

Debuting

Monday, August 13, 2012

Here's my Debut!

I still don't have a fancy camera that zooms, but that's the next thing I'll be looking for so I can add nice pictures to this blog.

Here are some of my favorite fashion items of the moment, most of which are still on my wish list. It's still the middle of August but for some reason I'm already craving fall clothes.
